Pistorius entitled to separate accommodation if jailed

Oscar Pistorius

Pistorius was convicted of the culpable homicide of Reeva Steenkamp by Judge Thokozile Masipa in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Friday and has been bailed until sentencing begins on October 13.

World-renowned Paralympian Pistorius faces a maximum prison sentence of 15 years as a result of the charge delivered by Judge Masipa, while the South African could face a further five years for a firearm charge he was also found guilty of.

If sent to prison, it has been revealed that the double-amputee may not have to share his accommodation with others as a result of his disability.

"Separate accommodation is arranged depending on the vulnerability caused by the disability," the department said.

"Inmates are accommodated in line with their type of disability. However, each case is based on its own merits."

The department also revealed that it is standard procedure to assess the risk for an inmate within six hours of his or her admission.

"Offenders have the right to conditions of detention that are consistent with human dignity, including at least exercise and the provision, at state expense, of adequate accommodation, nutrition, reading material and medical treatment," they said.
