The Philadelphia Eagles confirmed on Monday that they have signed free-agent Tim Tebow on a one-year deal, giving the high-profile quarterback another shot at the big time

The 27-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner has not played in the NFL since 2012 but Philadelphia have taken a punt on Tebow after making him their fifth rostered QB.

Tebow will challenge the likes of Sam Bradford and former New York Jets team-mate Mark Sanchez to be Chip Kelly's leading quarterback at the Eagles this year.

Selected by the Denver Broncos from the Florida Gators in the 2010 NFL Draft, Tebow came to prominence in 2011 when he took over from Kyle Orton as the number one quarterback for the Colorado-based team.

Tebow played 14 games, starting 11, and led the Broncos to the AFC West title thanks to 12 passing touchdowns and six rushing TDs, while he also produced three scores in Denver's two play-off games.

But it was Tebow's pass completion rate of just 46.5 per cent that concerned many pundits.

After the Broncos acquired Peyton Manning in the lead-up to the 2012 season, Tebow was traded to the Jets but did not start a match that year as coach Rex Ryan favoured Sanchez.

In his 12 appearances off the bench, Tebow threw just six completed passes from eight attempts for 39 yards.

In 2013, Tebow was signed by the New England Patriots for pre-season but failed to make their final roster.
