Twins shell out big money in contract extension with Phil Hughes

Phil Hughes and the Twins reportedly have agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract extension.

The New York Daily News reports the deal is tacked on to the two years and $16 million remaining on the pitcher's current contract, which means Hughes will remain in Minnesota until at least 2019.

The 28-year-old right-hander spent seven seasons with the Yankees but departed as a free agent after an abysmal 2013 season in which he went 4-14 with a 5.63 ERA in 30 games.

He signed a three-year, $24 million deal with Minnesota in December 2013 and the 2014 season was far kinder to the pitcher. Hughes went 16-10 with a 3.52 ERA in 32 starts in his first season in Minnesota, walking only 16 in 209 2/3 innings.
