The Panthers are working with veteran linebacker Thomas Davis on a contract extension, according to Black and Blue Review.

Davis, 32, is set to count $10 million against the salary cap this season, but an extension would certainly alleviate the pinch his current contract puts on Carolina as it tries to sign Cam Newton to a long-term deal before the end of the season.

“We’re trying to get something worked out. It’s a process, but I’m not stressing over it one bit,” Davis said. “Really and truly, I just want to be here. I want to play football here. If I’m not playing here, I’m not playing football.”

Carolina drafted Davis, last season’s Walter Payton Man of the Year recipient, in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He missed the entire 2010 season and large chunks of the 2009 and 2011 seasons with knee injuries, but has since bounced back with three consecutive seasons of at least 100 combined tackles.
