They may not be related but David Beckham presented Odell Beckham Jr with some familial advice following a recent meeting between the two men.

One was known for his free-kick prowess, while the other is renowned for catching an NFL football with one hand and the pair came together at a corporate event in New Jersey last week.

And 22-year-old New York Giants wide receiver Beckham Jr – the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year – walked away from his iconic namesake not only starstruck but with a request from the former Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain star.

"He just told me, 'You have to keep the legacy going,'" Beckham Jr told reporters on Thursday.

"He told me he was watching me throughout the season, catching bits and pieces of it in London or LA, wherever he's at, but he's been keeping up with me and watching me, and just to keep up the family name."

Beckham Jr, who played football (soccer) growing up and said last month he could have been a 'Neymar or Messi' type of player, added: "I got to meet one of my childhood idols since I could ever remember, and a guy who I watched probably since I was four or five years old, David Beckham.

"It was a pretty surreal moment for me, meeting a guy who I've clowned about being a relative of all this time."
