MLB Wrap: A's, Nats extend MLB winning streaks

Josh Reddick - Cropped

The Oakland Athletics swept the Texas Rangers courtesy of a 6-3 victory on Thursday, marking their fifth straight win in MLB.

The Rangers led 2-0 and 3-2, but the A's extended Texas losing streak to five courtesy of a three-run seventh inning at the Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Josh Reddick was influential for Oakland, his sacrifice fly in the sixth inning helping tie the game at 3-3 before his two-run single gave the A's a match-winning lead.

The Washington Nationals have the longest active winning streak in the major leagues, after a 7-0 rout of the Atlanta Braves.

Three errors blighted the Braves' performance, which was limited by Doug Fister's seven scoreless innings pitched for the braves - taking his run of blank innings to 41.1, and leading the Nats to their sixth straight victory.

Other sides to earn shutouts were the Houston Astros (over the New York Yankees 4-0), the Los Angeles Dodgers (4-0 over the Chicago Cubs) and the New York Mets (2-0 over the Milwaukee Brewers).

The St Louis Cardinals were denied a shutout in the ninth inning, but downed the Miami Marlins 5-1.

Five multi-run innings helped the San Francisco Giants to a 13-8 victory over the San Diego Padres, who scored all of their runs in the seventh and eighth innings to form a brave but unsuccessful comeback.

The Colorado Rockies bore more success from their late runs, a five-run eighth boosting them past the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 and the Baltimore Orioles went on a run of seven straight hits in their 8-6 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Carlos Sanchez's three-run triple in the 10th inning helped the Chicago White Sox defeat the Detroit Tigers 8-7, while the Cincinnati Reds won 5-4 over the Pittsburgh Pirates after 13 innings.

IMPACT PLAYERS
Matt Wieters, Baltimore Orioles: The catcher smashed a two-run homer in the fourth inning against the Red Sox. He was two-for-five at the plate.

Brandon Belt, San Diego Padres: Belt went three-for-five at the plate and hit two triples, bringing in a run with the first hit and scoring to ignite a three-run surge in the fourth inning.

Jacob deGrom, New York Mets: In perfect form, deGrom pitched eight scoreless innings in a winning effort against the Brewers. He struck out seven, had zero walks and just four hits over the span of 100 pitches.

KEY INJURIES
Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant left the game against the Dodgers in the second inning because he was suffering from flu-like symptoms.

Left hander Jorge de la Rosa is day-to-day with the Rockies. He has a cut on his left middle finger that he sustained in the sixth inning against the Diamondbacks.

REACTIONS
"If you're going to start a streak, you've got to win one," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

"We've had a horrible trip. We haven't scored. Three one-run losses. So let's just go home where we've played well, and hopefully we can continue this [winning]."

FACT OF THE DAY
All good things must come to an end. Braves right fielder Nick Markakis' errorless game streak was ended at 398 with a first-inning error against the Nationals.

SURPRISE PERFORMERS
Good: Nationals pitcher Doug Fister had his best game of the season, lasting seven innings and allowing just four hits and no scores. This is only his second appearance since he came off the disabled list June 18.

Bad: Jon Lester had a rough go during the game against the Dodgers. The pitcher lasted only four innings and gave up four runs and four walks in the Cubs's loss.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Nats take their winning streak to Philadelphia to tackle the Phillies, the Tigers will look to keep White Sox starter Jose Quintana winless this season, and the Reds are in New York against the Mets.
