Cardinals release three-time Pro Bowler Darnell Dockett

Darnell Dockett

The Arizona Cardinals on Friday released three-time Pro Bowler Darnell Dockett, the team announced.

Dockett, a defensive tackle, will turn 34 in May and missed the 2014 season with torn knee ligament. The move saves the Cardinals $6.8 million in salary-cap space by trimming his $6.55 million salary.

"We have been very clear about our feelings for Darnell and our desire to have him back," general manager Steve Keim said. "After speaking with him and his representatives, we decided that this move today makes the most sense for both the team and the player and allows each to keep all of its options open."

Although the Big Red released Dockett, team officials made it clear they want him back on the roster next season at a lesser price.

A 11-year pro with the Cardinals, Dockett has 459 tackles, 40.5 sacks, four interceptions and seven forced fumbles. He was a leader on the 2008 team that reached the Super Bowl.
