Scouts leave pro day after prospects are too slow in 40-yard dash

New stopwatch

If you cannot run faster than a 4.50 40-yard dash time then you do not belong in professional football. At least that is what professional scouts at Jackson State's pro day told prospects Friday.

According to The Clarion Ledger, a mix of 13 NFL and CFL scouts ended the workout for any prospect who did not run at least a 4.50.

"They were cutting people after the 40, so I guess if your time wasn't perfect, they were cutting you," former Jackson State wide receiver Tobias Singleton said.

Not even allowing prospects to showcase their talent in any other drills than the 40, the scouts told prospects the news after commencing in a separate room for a meeting.

"Just one drill, maybe I could've understood they'd give us two or three more drills," Jackson State linebacker Ariane McCree said. "But one drill, it's just — there are a lot of guys out there who can run fast but they can't jump. … You can't just eliminate one guy who doesn't do one thing right."

Players from schools including Mississippi Valley State, Belhaven and Murray State were also in attendance. West Alabama WR Stephanio McNair was the only player to make the qualifying time.

The scouts, most of whom just came from Ole Miss' pro day, began the evaluations almost an hour after its scheduled 2:30 p.m. time.
