Mets, Cardinals continue win streaks, Cespedes grand slam powers Tigers

Yoenis Cespedes - Cropped

The Detroit Tigers bounced back from their heavy defeat to the Chicago White Sox, inflicting a 9-1 result to clinch their three-game MLB series.

The Tigers were led by outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, who hit two home runs - including a first-inning grand slam.

Injuries to Travis d'Arnaud and Jerry Blevins could not stop the New York Mets from winning an eighth straight contest, as they saw off the Miami Marlins 7-6.

The Seattle Mariners stormed home to beat the Texas Rangers 11-10, with the winners scoring six unanswered runs across the final three innings.

There was a shutout win for the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-0 over the Colorado Rockies, while the St Louis Cardinals edged the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 and the Arizona Diamondbacks dealt World Series champions the San Francisco Giants a 5-1 loss.

There were home wins for the Kansas City Royals (4-2 over the Oakland Athletics), the Houston Astros (4-3 over the Los Angeles Angels), Minnesota Twins (7-2 over the Cleveland Indians), and the Pittsburgh Pirates (5-2 over the Milwaukee Brewers).

Among the road victors were the Atlanta Braves (5-2 over the Toronto Blue Jays), the New York Yankees (5-3 over the Tampa Bay Rays), and the San Diego Padres (5-2 over the Chicago Cubs).

IMPACT PLAYERS
Robinson Cano, Seattle Mariners: Second baseman Cano reached first base five times in an 11-10 win against the Rangers. He went three-from-four with two runs, an RBI and two walks.

Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles: Outfielder Jones is on a mission this season. He's now hitting .444 with five home runs and 15 RBIs after going four-from-five with a home run and five RBIs in an 8-3 win against the Red Sox.

Brandon McCarthy, Los Angeles Dodgers: Starting pitcher McCarthy blanked the Rockies in six innings of work. He allowed just three hits and struck out six batters.

KEY INJURIES
Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis left the game after getting hit in the side by a pitch. He exited in a great deal of pain, and the initial diagnosis is a rib contusion. Travis came over from the Tigers in the off-season for Anthony Gose and has hit three home runs.

Adding to the Mets' injury woes, X-rays revealed relief pitcher Jerry Blevins has a fractured left forearm after he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Dee Gordon.

Diamondbacks starting pitcher Patrick Corbin (elbow) will throw live batting practice on Tuesday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March 2014.

REACTION
The saga between the Athletics and Royals continued when A's pitcher Scott Kazmir hit Lorenzo Cain in the lower leg.

Players stayed in the dugout, but both benches were warned and Royals manager Ned Yost and pitching coach Dave Eiland were ejected.

All of it stemmed from Brett Lawrie's poor-intention slide into second base that injured Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar on Friday.

"I just went out to find out why he threw Dave out," Yost said.

"Dave was yelling, but Dave was yelling at Kazmir. The umpire thought he was yelling at him.

"But the umpires did a great job. This is a tremendous crew led by Jim Joyce. They did all that they could do to control it."

SURPRISE PERFORMER
Nelson Cruz went three-for-six while belting his MLB-leading seventh and eighth home runs in an 11-10 win over the Rangers, in which he hit the game-winner.

These were Cruz's first home runs at home, and while his performance wasn't surprising, we're just shocked pitchers keep giving him good pitches to hit.

FACTS OF THE DAY
The Tigers and Mets became the first teams to 10 wins; the Mets did so while riding an eight-game win streak.

Indians first baseman Carlos Santana belted the 100th home run of his career in a 7-2 loss to the Twins.

A LOOK AHEAD
The streaking Cardinals - they have won five straight - head to the capital to take on the Nationals, the Tigers will look to continue their recent dominance of the Yankees and the in-form Mets host the Braves.
