For the first time in more than 25 years, the Devils have a new general manager.

The team announced Monday it will hire former Penguins general manager Ray Shero for the position. Shero takes over for longtime executive Lou Lamoriello, who since 1987 has overseen the Devils' hockey operations as general manager and team president.

Lamoriello, 72, said his decision to cede general manager responsibilities was "my decision with 100 percent support of ownership." He will continue as team president.

“Ray is well-respected throughout the hockey industry and knows what it takes to win,” Lamoriello said in a statement. “His 22 seasons of NHL front-office experience will be beneficial to the New Jersey Devils organization. I look forward to working alongside Ray.”

Shero, who will report to Lamoriello, will have "the powers that come with that position," Lamoriello said.

Shero, 52, spent eight seasons with Penguins, leading them to a Stanley Cup in 2009. He was fired last season along with coach Dan Bylsma in a front-office overhaul. Among his first orders of business will be hiring a coach, and a reunion with Bylsma could be offing.
