Major League Baseball wants to improve its overall language skills.

According to the New York Times ,  an initiative to have Spanish-speaking interpreters on each club is in the works. The plan is being developed with the help of the players’ union.

“We are looking for this support to be in all 30 clubhouses,” MLBPA executive director Tony Clark told the Times. Clark added the union has already started hiring process.

An unnamed baseball spokesman told the Times that clubs are on board with the idea but couldn’t say if team would be required or simply encouraged to hire interpreters.

Many Asian players have their own interpreters, but it’s not common practice for Latin players.

MLB does allow for language services upon request but the proposed initiative would make interpreters more accessible.
