MLB Nightly 9: Orioles explode for 18 runs in win against Red Sox

Protestors lined the streets of Baltimore on Saturday to show their displeasure over Freddie Gray's death. Sunday, the action at Camden Yards was inside the stadium to the tune of 18 runs by the Orioles against the Red Sox.

Alex Rodriguez is one home run away from tying Willie Mays for fourth all-time with 660 career homers, and he continues to impress early in the season.

Impact players

C — Miguel Montero, Cubs: Montero went 2 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in a 5-2 win over the Reds.

1B — Miguel Cabrera, Tigers: Miggy is clicking on all cylinders right now. He went 3 for 4 with three runs, a home run and three RBIs in an 8-6 win over the Indians.

2B — Dee Gordon, Marlins: Gordon continued his hitting ways with a 4-for-5 effort against the Nationals. He's now hitting .390 on the season.

SS — Hanley Ramirez, Red Sox: The Red Sox may have been embarrassed at Camden Yards, but it had nothing to do with Han-Ram, who went 2 for 5 with two home runs and four RBIs.

3B — Jimmy Paredes, Orioles: Paredes has become a repeat honoree on this list since being activated from the DL. He went 3 for 5 with a run and three RBIs in Baltimore's 18-run outburst.

OF — Jake Marisnick, Astros: After nearly sitting out with leg tightness, Marisnick made the most out his decision to play. He went 2 for 4 with three runs, a home run, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

DH — Alex Rodriguez, Yankees: A-Rod has been a revelation so far this year. He was the difference again Sunday, going 2 for 4 with a two-run home run.

SP – Chris Archer, Rays: Archer pitched a gem against the Blue Jays. He only gave up two hits and struck out seven in seven shutout innings.

Key injuries

The Dodgers placed outfielder Yasiel Puig on the 15-day DL, retroactive to April 25, with a left hamstring strain.

Cardinals outfielder Jason Heyward left Sunday's game versus the Brewers with tightness in his left groin. Heyward tweaked it while chasing after a ball in the right-field corner. He tested things out with some jogging and looked to be moving okay, but the Cardinals decided to go ahead and pull him to be safe.

Surprise performers

Good: The Orioles' offense scorched Boston for 18 runs with seven different players recording two or more hits. Delmon Young led the way with three hits and five RBIs, and Chris Davis hit his third home run of the season.

Bad: The Dodgers. Not because of anything they have or haven't done on the field so far this season, but for their stubbornness with their hottest offensive player. Alex Guerrero, 28, is batting .500 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in just 11 games, and most of those were just one-at-bat pinch hits. It's time to get this guy some everyday reps.

Reactions

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak confirmed in an interview on KMOX 1120 AM Sunday that Adam Wainwright (Achilles) is likely done for the season.

"I would imagine that with this injury he will not pitch again this season, but we want to wait for the reports Monday," the GM said.

The Angels and Rangers continue to discuss a trade involving outfielder Josh Hamilton that could become final on Monday.

The Royals optioned relief pitcher Aaron Brooks to Triple-A Omaha.

A look ahead

Royals (12-6) at Indians (6-11) 6:10 p.m.: The struggling Indians will send Corey Kluber to the mound to try and pick up a game on the Royals in the AL Central. Kansas City has had a tumultuous season so far, but are still second in the division.

Pirates (11-8) at Cubs (10-7) 8:05 p.m.: Two of the younger teams in baseball square off in what should be a compelling series. Pittsburgh fans are probably unconvinced the man wearing Andrew McCutchen's jersey is the real thing. The dreads are gone, and so is his swing (.186 avg.). On the North Side of Chicago, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell are here to stay and have rejuvenated the Cubs' fan base.

Astros (11-7) at Padres (11-9) 10:10 p.m.: This interleague series presents two of the more surprising teams in MLB. We knew San Diego had talent heading into the season, but they've looked very steady, and the Astros have won seven of their last eight games.
