MLB Nightly 9: Mike Trout becomes youngest to reach 100 HRs, SBs

Angels outfielder Mike Trout showed us Friday why he's the face of baseball. With the first of two home runs on the night, he became the youngest player in MLB history to reach 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases. Trout led LA to a 6-3 victory over the Astros.

Impact players

C — Stephen Vogt, Athletics: Vogt homered twice as part of a 3-for-4 effort in Oakland's 6-4 loss to Kansas City. He raised his average to .353.

1B — Adrian Gonzalez, Dodgers: Gonzalez has been arguably the best hitter in baseball thus far. He went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs in a 7-3 win over the Rockies.

2B — Howie Kendrick, Dodgers: Kendrick went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, bringing his average up to .342.

SS — Ian Desmond, Nationals: Desmond continues to climb out of the hole he put himself into after the first week. He went 3 for 4 with two runs scored as the Nats routed the Phillies 7-2.

3B — Josh Donaldson, Blue Jays: Donaldson is starting to find his stride in Toronto. He homered twice and drove in three runs in a loss to the Braves, raising his average to .302.

OF — Wil Myers, Padres: Myers went 3 for 4, including a three-run homer in the seventh that proved to be the difference in a 5-4 win against the Cubs.

DH — Alex Rodriguez, Yankees: Rodriguez, 39, showed he still has some gas in the tank. He went 3 for 4 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored in a 5-4 win over the Rays. Rodriguez has 658 career home run, two away from Willie Mays on the all-time list.

SP — David Price, Tigers: Price was nasty once again for the 9-1 Tigers. Though he didn't get the win, Price pitched eight innings, allowing just one run and striking out nine.

Key injuries

MLive.com reports Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander has been ruled out for his scheduled start on Tuesday. This is the second time the 32-year-old hurler, who is on the disabled list with a triceps issue, has been scratched. 

Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar suffered a right knee sprain when Athletics third baseman Brett Lawrie slid into second base spikes high. Benches momentarily cleared, but no punches were thrown.

Web gem

Kevin Pillar's week of web gems continued Friday. This time, the Blue Jays outfielder made a diving catch to rob the Braves' Freddie Freeman of a hit.

Surprise performances

Good: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning as Boston edged Baltimore 3-2. Bogaerts is hitting a cool .395.

Bad: Kris Bryant made his much-anticipated Cubs debut, but fans were left wanting more after the phenom third baseman went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in a 5-4 loss to the Padres.

Off the field

The Royals honored Athletics designated hitter Billy Butler in his return to Kauffman Stadium. The team presented Butler his 2014 American League Championship ring.

The Royals' trio of Rawlings Gold Glove winners also received their awards. Salvador Perez and Eric Hosmer picked up their hardware for a second straight year and four-time winner Alex Gordon not only got his Gold Glove, but also the Platinum Glove representing of the best defensive player in the league. 

Indians manager Terry Francona told reporters (via MLB.com) that right-hander Danny Salazar will remain in the rotation after his start Saturday.

Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle is mulling retirement after the season, according to CBS Sports. Buehrle is 201-152 lifetime with a 3.81 ERA.

Facts of the day

The Mets won their sixth straight game Friday, a 4-1 win over the Marlins. Bartolo Colon pitched another great game, and even had an RBI.

On the other side of the spectrum, the defending world champion Giants have lost eight in a row after falling to the Diamondbacks 9-0.

White Sox (3-6) at Tigers (9-1) 1:08 p.m.: Chris Sale looks to build on his impressive debut after returning from a broken foot. He'll face a stiff test in the red-hot Tigers and Anibal Sanchez.

Orioles (5-5) at Red Sox (7-3) 4:05 p.m.: Will the real Clay Buchholz please stand up? After a promising outing on opening day, Buchholz was drilled by the Yankees in his second start. The Orioles have some dangerous bats.
