Brewers pitcher Will Smith ejected for having foreign substance on arm

Major league players apparently haven't learned from Michael Pineda when it comes to applying a foreign substance to their bodies.

Brewers pitcher Will Smith was ejected Thursday by crew chief Jim Joyce for having a substance on his right arm, the team announced. Smith was tossed after throwing four pitches in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Frustrated with the ejection, Smith gestured at the Braves' bench as he left the field.

Neal Cotts replaced Smith. The Braves went on to score seven runs in the inning to break a 1-1 tie.

Pineda, a Yankees right-hander, was suspended for 10 games last year after the Red Sox alerted umpires that he had pine tar on his neck. Pineda later expressed remorse for his "mistake."

UPDATE: Smith (via Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) didn't shy away from questions about what happened.

Naturally, the "everyone does it" chorus chimed in.

UPDATE 2: Mets left-hander Jerry Blevins is a member of the chorus.
