The Biloxi Shuckers, the Double-A affiliate of the Brewers, were supposed to play their first home game in a new stadium on June 6.

But Biloxi Mayor Andrew "FoFo" Gilich said Wednesday that MGM Park won't be ready in time, according to the Sun Herald.

"I toured the stadium and met with representatives of Yates Construction to get an update," Gilich said. "I was told it would cost $380,000 extra to open June 6, provided the stadium could qualify for a temporary certificate of occupancy.

"My decision was an easy one. I support the stadium and the Biloxi Shuckers, and I'm eager to see the first home game. But I certainly won't ask the taxpayers to invest that much more into the project, especially with no assurances that the stadium would be ready in nine days."

Team co-owner Ken Young said he was disappointed, but added the team would "certainly try to get open as quickly as possible."

The Shuckers had a scheduled 55-game road trip to begin the season while waiting for the 5,000-seat stadium to be built. Tickets for the home opener went on sale May 13, despite concerns the stadium would not be ready until August.

The city's contract with Yates Construction says the company has until Aug. 4 to complete the project.

"There seems to be some misperceptions that construction is behind schedule just because it's not ready yet," Gilich said. "Yates has worked hard to finish ahead of schedule and I believe they will."
