Before the Mayweather and Pacquiao can exchange punches again, Pacquiao must recover from right shoulder surgery on a torn rotator cuff.

"I will fight him in a year after his surgery," Mayweather told Stephen A. Smith through a text Tuesday afternoon.

The first fight took years to put together, but Arum said he believes he and Mayweather's handlers can schedule a rematch much quicker.

"I think we now know what the pitfalls were," Arum told ESPN. "And, ultimately, with all the aggravation and trouble, look at the pot of gold that we both produced. I think there will probably be less aggravation in a rematch. We understand each other better now. There's a real possibility it could work even better."

Arum said Mayweather should schedule Pacquiao as his next opponent and fight him in April. The MGM plans to open a 20,000-seat arena in Las Vegas that month that would make the rematch an even bigger spectacle.

Pacquiao's surgery was scheduled for Wednesday. Recovery time is likely at least nine months. Once Pacquiao is ready to go, Arum sees no reason why there couldn't be a rematch.

"We first have to make sure the rotator cuff heals well," Arum said to ESPN. "Dr. (Neal) ElAttrache is a famous surgeon, one of the best in the business, so I'm confident the surgery will work, and if it does, why wouldn't we entertain a rematch?"
