Matt Hegarty better be in good shape. The former Notre Dame offensive lineman has decided to play his fifth and final year of eligibility in the fast-paced Oregon offense under Mark Helfrich.

Hegarty announced in March his plans to transfer.

Hegarty brings versatility and experience to the Ducks’ offensive line after starting 11 games for the Irish last season at guard and center. He should compete immediately for the starting center role vacated by Hroniss Grasu, who was drafted in the third round by the Chicago Bears earlier this month.

Hegarty’s success is an especially compelling story considering the 6-5, 296-pound lineman suffered a “mini-stroke” and underwent heart surgery late in 2012 to repair two previously undetected holes in his heart that had existed since he was born.
