Harvey leads Mets past Yankees, Wainwright hurt

Matt Harvey

Matt Harvey continued his good start to the MLB season as the New York Mets claimed an 8-2 win over the Yankees on Saturday.

Harvey improved to a 4-0 record in 2015 after pitching over eight strong innings, striking out seven.

Adam Wainwright's ankle injury is a worry for the St Louis Cardinals, who managed a 5-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers despite the pitcher's early exit.

Alfredo Simon is, like Harvey, 4-0 after helping the Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 victory against the Cleveland Indians.

The Houston Astros were too strong for the Oakland Athletics in a 9-3 win, the Miami Marlins thrashed the Washington Nationals 8-0 and the Tampa Bay Rays rallied past the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2.

The San Francisco Giants battled past the Colorado Rockies 5-4, the Los Angeles Dodgers had an 11-8 win over the San Diego Padres and the Angels were 4-1 winners over the Texas Rangers.

The Atlanta Braves enjoyed a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, the Baltimore Orioles needed 11 innings to edge the Boston Red Sox 5-4 and the Pittsburgh Pirates overcame the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1.

The Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners 8-5, while the Chicago Cubs-Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals-Chicago White Sox matches were postponed.

IMPACT PLAYERS
Mark Teixeira, New York Yankees - Teixeira bashed his eighth home run of the season in a three-for-four day, despite losing to the Mets.

Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins -  Watch out everyone, Stanton is starting to heat up. After failing to hit a home run in his first nine games, Stanton has now hit five homers in his last nine games. He went three-for-three with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored in an 8-0 drubbing of the Nationals.

Matt Harvey, New York Mets - Harvey was tremendous against his in-city rivals, giving up only two runs in over eight innings, while striking out seven. He moved to 4-0 with the win.

KEY INJURIES
Athletics second baseman Ben Zobrist has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, and will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery. He's expected to miss at least four weeks. Eric Sogard will fill in at second base.

The Red Sox placed outfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day DL with a hamstring strain.

Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury left Saturday's game with hip tightness. Chris Young will fill in at centre if Ellsbury is required to miss any time.

Dodgers relief pitcher Joel Peralta is dealing with "dead arm" and may require a stint on the DL.

Wainwright left the game with what appeared to be an Achilles injury, but the team is calling it a "left ankle injury".

SURPRISE PERFORMERS
Good: The Marlins are starting to heat up, and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria is leading the way. He belted a three-run home run in a 8-0 win against the Nationals two games after going four-for-four from the plate.

Bad: C.C Sabathia continues to struggle. His latest mishap came Saturday when he allowed seven earned runs in five innings against the Mets, raising his ERA to 5.96 on the season.

FACTS OF THE DAY
Tigers platoon centre fielder Rajai Davis went two-for-four with three runs and three stolen bases.

Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera drew four walks.

REACTION
"Wow. As good as advertised, no doubt about it … He's a horse. He's got four-plus pitches, throws them all for strikes, great demeanour out there on the mound. The Mets are in good shape. He's a cornerstone for them." - Alex Rodriguez, on Mets pitcher Harvey.

"I thought I got hit by something," said Wainwright, who pulled up lame after a fifth-inning pop-out on Saturday night in Milwaukee. "If you look at the replay, I get out of the box and I looked back to think the catcher’s mask must of hit me or the bat must’ve hit me, something must’ve hit me." In other words, it is his Achilles tendon. And if he ruptured it, the ace right-hander could be done for the rest of the 2015 season.

A LOOK AHEAD
The Royals and White Sox will finish their game that is locked at 2-2 in the eighth before facing off in a fresh outing.

Expect plenty of runs again when the Dodgers and Padres do battle, while the Red Sox are at the Orioles again.
