Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch has signed a two-year contract extension with the NFL team.

The 28-year-old was entering the final year of his contact and reportedly considering retirement, but the Seahawks announced on Friday that Lynch had re-signed through the 2017 season.

Lynch has led the Seahawks' rushing through each of the past five seasons, helping them to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances and one championship.

"The Seattle Seahawks have signed running back Marshawn Lynch to a two-year extension through the 2017 season, the club announced today," Seattle said in a statement.

Lynch ran for 1,306 yards and 17 all-purpose touchdowns last season.

He also finished with 4.66 yards per carry, the second best of his career.

Lynch joined the Seahawks in October 2010 after a trade with the Buffalo Bills and he has gone on to earn four straight Pro Bowl berths.

The California native, who is renowned for his apathetic relationship with the media, was at the centre of a saga regarding Seattle's final play in their 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots in this year's Super Bowl.

With one yard to the end zone, the Seahawks decided to pass rather than hand off to Lynch, with some claiming the decision was based on a supposed poor relationship between the running back and coach Pete Carroll.
