If there was any doubt about who would be Texas A&M's No. 1 quarterback going into fall, there shouldn't be anymore.

Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin, in a Periscope interview with Outkick the Coverage's Clay Travis, said his team will enter fall camp the same way it finished the 2014 season: with Kyle Allen as the No. 1 QB.

"Kyle Allen is the guy right now," Sumllin said (transcript via the Dallas Morning News). "I usually go two weeks before the first game before announcing the guy. You can’t end the season as the MVP of the bowl game and not start off number one."

Allen was 22 for 35 for 294 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Aggies to a 45-37 Liberty Bowl victory over West Virginia, his best performance in a freshman season in which he took over eight games in and completed 118-of-192 passes with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Aggies' quarterback situation has been a topic of discussion after Kenny Hill left the program — subsequently enrolling at TCU — and 5-star dual-threat QB Kyler Murray, of Allen, Texas, signed with A&M.

"Before we signed Murray, we only had one scholarship quarterback because Kenny left," Sumlin said. "The backup will play. Competition is a coach’s best friend."

In fact, competition may have prepared Allen to step in last season after Hill led Texas A&M to a 5-0 start but was benched after a three-game losing streak and then was suspended for two games after that for a violation of team rules. Allen took over the starting job and never gave it back.
