The Russian has enjoyed a fine 2014 and is attempting to defend the all-around title she won at the 2013 event in Kiev.

Kudryavtseva's hopes of further accolades in Izmir started well on Monday as she showcased her unique style and was rewarded with a score of 18.650 by the judges, a total that also leaves her top of the all-around standings.

Earlier, Margarita Mamun had received the first score over 18 in the discipline with a near-flawless performance and she ended the day in second place ahead of Melitina Staniouta.

In the hoop discipline, South Korea's Son Yeon-jae dazzled with a complicated set and subsequently received a total of 17.350 points to top the standings.

Marina Durunda impressed with a flamboyant showing and scored 17.150 and sits in second place.

The Azerbaijani was not happy with her result, though, and lodged an immediate appeal, but the judges opted against altering her total.
