The Diamondbacks this week will wear a black patch with "KAYLA" written on the sleeve in honor of Prescott, Ariz., resident Kayla Mueller.

A human rights activist, Mueller died while being held by Islamic State militants in Syria last month.

“Kayla will always have a special place in the history of Arizona and we are deeply saddened by her loss,” D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall said in a statement. “The way in which she helped others and gave back to the world around her embodied many of the core values of our organization and our players will undoubtedly be proud to wear her name on their sleeves.”

The 26-year-old was held captive in Syria for 18 months before being killed Feb. 6.

Mueller graduated from Northern Arizona University, where she studied political science with an emphasis on international issues. She traveled abroad, volunteering for multiple humanitarian groups and helping young children from other countries.
