Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who on Tuesday underwent an MRI exam on his arm, was cleared Wednesday to resume a throwing program that will lead to his return to the team's starting rotation, the Tigers announced.

It's the outcome the right-hander and the team had hoped to get when Dr. Tony Romeo reviewed results from the MRI exam, Verlander's third in less than three weeks.

He underwent the first MRI on April 16, a day after needing to cut short a simulated game in Pittsburgh. He underwent another April 24 that showed improvement, but fluid continued to be visible in the triceps area of his throwing arm.

Even though this week's exam apparently showed no fluid or inflammation, Verlander likely is still looking at a June return after what has been described "a full spring training" worth of throwing and arm-strength building.

Verlander has been limited to light toss on a daily basis while awaiting the MRI exam and its results.
