Jim Schwartz could be serving an important role with NFL officials next season.

According to a source at FOX Sports, the former Bills defensive coordinator will be helping the league make calls in the officiating office. His position as a former coach will provide a different perspective for officials, the source said.

Schwartz was dismissed from Buffalo in January after Rex Ryan took over as head coach, even though the Bills had the No. 4 overall defense in 2014.

Schwartz drew consideration from other NFL teams for defensive coordinator positions, but said he will be "judicious in the next coaching job." His past positions include being head coach of the Lions from 2009-13 and serving as the Titans defensive coordinator from 2001-08.

Schwartz reportedly will begin his new position on Tuesday.
