Cardinals' Jaime Garcia hits snag in shoulder recovery

Jaime Garcia

Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia was seemingly ahead of schedule in his recovery from left shoulder surgery this spring, but suffered a setback Saturday.

After notifying the team of shoulder discomfort, Garcia was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said the latest development with Garcia will cause the team to slow things down as the pitcher works his way back to the St. Louis rotation.

"Now it's a 'hit the brakes,'" Matheny said Saturday, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "That takes time."

Garcia was able to make it through an 80-pitch simulated game Tuesday, and the team was hopeful he might be able to start the season in the rotation. He has a 3.86 ERA and 13/3 K/BB ratio in 9 1/3 innings across three starts this spring.

The 28-year-old pitcher has only made 16 starts in the last two seasons while battling injuries. He is 42-26 in his career with a 3.50 ERA.
