Is the NFL coming to Australia?

Regular season NFL games could be heading to overseas countries other than the United Kingdom following the approval of a league resolution.

To date, 12 international series games have been held at Wembley in London, the most recent of which taking place last Sunday as the New York Jets beat the Miami Dolphins 27-14.

Two further games are set to be held at Wembley this season and more international games are on the horizon following the expansion of a 2011 resolution that permitted the league to schedule games in the UK through to 2016.

But the NFL now appears to have its eye on other markets outside the UK, including Australia following the emergence of San Francisco 49ers recruit Jarryd Hayne this season.

"This marks an important step in our long-term international growth," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said.

"Fans in the UK have responded incredibly well to the regular-season games we have played in London since 2007.

"They have demanded more NFL games, and we have worked to accommodate them.

"We think it's time to expand our International Series to other countries and respond to the growing interest in our game not only in the UK, but elsewhere around the world."

The Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers played an exhibition game in Sydney back in 1999 but the NFL has never taken a regular season game Down Under.

Major League Baseball held their 2014 season opener between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Hayne's successful switch from rugby league to the NFL has fuelled interest in American Football, with a 'Bring the NFL to Australia' Facebook page attracting almost 4,000 likes.
