Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Dodgers held out as long as they could, but the left-hander won't be able to avoid the knife.

Sidelined since spring training with a shoulder impingement, Ryu will undergo surgery Thursday, the team announced. The procedure likely will end his season.

The Dodgers have said MRIs revealed no structural damage in the pitcher's shoulder, and the team was hopeful an extended period of rest would get him on track, but Ryu wasn't improving. According to the Los Angeles Times, the team believes the only way to know for sure what's going on with Ryu's shoulder is to get inside it and take a look.

Ryu, 28, was a steady contributor in Los Angeles' rotation the past two seasons after arriving from South Korea. He won 14 games each year and has a 3.17 ERA in 56 major league starts.

Ryu is being paid $4 million this season but is guaranteed $7 million each of the next three seasons.
