Holmes not convinced by boxing's new school

Former IBF and WBC heavyweight champion Holmes is considered one of the greatest boxers of all time, boasting a record of 69 wins from 75 fights.

Holmes, who finally retired in 2002, was also one victory short of Rocky Marciano's unbeaten heavyweight career streak of 49-0 but then lost back-to-back bouts with Michael Spinks.

Holmes - beaten by Mike Tyson in 1988 after coming out of retirement -  still feels he is overlooked when compared to other boxing greats including Muhammed Ali, Kenny Norton, Joe Frazier and George Foreman.

However, the 65-year-old is also convinced the likes of WBA, WBC and The Ring welterweight title holder Floyd Mayweather - as well as IBF heavyweight holder Wladimir Klitschko - are not of the same calibre as the aforementioned group.

Asked whether Mayweather was a great fighter, Holmes told Perform: "No. He's a good fighter and he could be a great fighter but he doesn't have the competition.

"The legends are guys like Kenny Norton, and Joe Frazier, George Foreman - those guys. The guys [today] do not know how to fight.

"The Klitschko brothers are okay, but who are they fighting? There isn't anybody.

"They want to call [Wladimir] one of the greatest, anybody can do that. I can make you a champion right now, get a bunch of guys out there that you can beat and when you beat all them guys you're the champion.

"That's what they are. They're not fighting anyone who's going to fight them back.

"You're not going to see the Thriller in Manila [in the modern era]. Ali and Frazier for three fights. Ken Norton and Ali, Larry Holmes and Ken Norton.

"You're not going to find any of that stuff. You're not going to find all these great fighters."
