Home favourite Lara Gut made a winning start to the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup weekend in St. Moritz with a stunning performance in the downhill.

The 23-year-old had not won a downhill race since March 2014 in Lenzerheide, but ended that wait in style to move up to tied-sixth in the downhill standings.

Gut handled the 2804-metre course brilliantly to cross the line in one minute 43.82 seconds, clear of Anna Fenninger and Edit Miklos in second and third.

Viktoria Rebensburg and Fabienne Suter completed the top five, but Lindsey Vonn and Tina Maze both made errors to undermine their challenges.

Vonn, who became the most successful women's skier in history in winning her 63rd World Cup race in Cortina d'Ampezzo last week, made a fantastic start and was over half a second ahead after the second sector.

However, the American then lost control on a tight turn which ended her attempt, allowing Fenninger to make up ground in the World Cup discipline standings.
