The Rays designated right-hander Grant Balfour for assignment after a rough performance against the Yankees on Saturday.

Balfour got off to a solid season this season, not allowing a run in  3 2/3 innings, but faltered against New York by walking three players and allowing a grand slam. The Yankees defeated the Rays 9-0.

Tampa Bay brought up Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham to fill Balfour's place on the roster.

Balfour signed a $12 million, two-year deal with the Rays last year and is owed $7 million for this season. In 2014, he posted a 4.91 ERA and had 57 strikeouts and 41 walks.
