If Roger Goodell has his way, NFL extra points will become a little more difficult and a lot more interesting.

The commissioner said at his annual pre-Super Bowl press conference Friday that he expects to continue discussions about potential changes to the play.

“Fans want every play to have suspense,” Goodell told reporters. “But the extra point has become virtually automatic. We have experimented with alternatives to make it a more competitive play, and we expect to advance these ideas through the Competition Committee this offseason.”

The league experimented with longer extra point attempts during the first two weeks of the 2014 preseason and the Pro Bowl. The ball was spotted at the 15-yard line, creating about a 33-yard PAT attempt. The ball is normally spotted at the 2-yard line. Kickers made 94 percent of their attempts at the longer distance in the preseason, about five percentage points lower than the success rate during the 2013 season.
