Oilers win NHL draft lottery, expected to pick McDavid

Connor McDavid - Cropped

The Edmonton Oilers will have the first pick in June's NHL Draft.

The Oilers were selected in Saturday's draft lottery and are expected to select Erie Otters centre Connor McDavid .

Boston University's Jack Eichel will likely go at number two to the Buffalo Sabres.

The Sabres had a 20 per cent chance of winning the lottery, with the Coyotes second at 13.5 per cent and the Oilers third at 11.5 per cent. The remaining 11 non-playoff teams each had less than a 10 percent chance of coming out with the top pick.

McDavid would join Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov as former number one picks playing for the Oilers.

Boston College defenseman Noah Hanifin and forward Dylan Strome - McDavid's team-mate with the Erie Otters and brother of Islanders forward Ryan Strome - are also tipped to go early in the draft.

The draft will be held on June 26-27 at the Florida Panthers' home, BB&T Center.
