Devils reveal unconventional coaching team

LouLamoriello

President and general manager Lou Lamoriello is to take charge for Saturday's clash with the New York Rangers after De Boer was fired by the NHL franchise on Friday following a 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.

Adam Oates, who was widely anticipated to be named as De Boer's replacement, will serve as the forwards coach, with Scott Stevens coaching the defence.

Lamoriello is only expected to be at the helm for a short time, although no new head coach is to be appointed until the end of the season, with Oates and Stevens to continue as co-coaches.

Former Washington Capitals head coach Oates served as an assistant when the Devils reached the 2012 Stanley Cup finals, which they lost to the Los Angeles Kings.

Stevens stepped down as an assistant with New Jersey in September and had previously won three Stanley Cup titles with the Devils as a player.

The Devils are 12-17-7 for the season and sit second bottom in the Metropolitan division of the Eastern Conference.
