David Ortiz to sit 'a couple of days' to clear head, work on swing

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who has only one hit in the past five games, will be held of the starting lineup for "a couple of days" to work on his swing, manager John Farrell told WEEI on Thursday.

Ortiz, who has started 42 of 47 games this season, has seen his average drop to .216 while in a 1-for-20 slide.

Earlier this week, Farrell had dropped Ortiz from the third spot in the lineup to fifth. Ortiz (.216/.303/.377) had hit third 38 times and fourth just twice this season before the change for Tuesday's game against the Twins. Ortiz went 1-for-4, but then took an 0-for-4 on Wednesday.

The Red Sox, who are 3-7 over the last 10, on open a four-game series Thursday at Texas.
