Cycling Australia announce World Championship squad

A strong nine-man team, which includes four Orica-GreenEdge riders, will compete in the elite men's race on Sunday September 29 with Evans expected to be one of the protected riders.

The race will consist of 14 laps of the 18.2 kilometre circuit and the riders are set to face 28 climbs with a maximum gradient of 11%.

Simon Gerrans is another rider who is set to be protected throughout the race, with the 34-year-old in fine form at the moment after becoming the first rider in history to win back-to-back Canadian grand prixs.

Team Sky's Richie Porter is a notable absentee, ending his season early due to illness.

Australia have selected a team of six to compete in the 127.4km long women's race and will also be aiming for a gold medal.

Tiffany Cromwell and Rachel Neylan represent their country's best hopes, with the women's event entailing seven laps of the circuit whch includes over 2.1km of climbs.

The UCI Road World Championships are set to get underway on September 21 in Ponferrada and will consist of 12 events across elite, under-23 and junior classes.
