Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was back on the ice for Wednesday’s practice, but the team checked three other players for mumps as a precaution.

Crosby can return to the lineup as soon as Thursday against the Avalanche after missing three games dealing with the mumps.

However, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, Robert Bortuzzo and Olli Matta are now being tested for the virus, just one day after forward Beau Bennett became the 15th NHL player confirmed to have mumps, according to USA Today.

"We're being cautious," Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said in an ESPN report. "All three of those players are in isolation. Any time that anybody even starts to not feel well, even if it's not mumps-like symptoms, we've gotten the person or player out of here as soon as we can."

All three players tested negative for mumps earlier in December.
