Cowboys release Sam from practice squad

Sam was released from the Cowboys' ranks on Tuesday as he failed to make their 53-man roster.

He was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the St Louis Rams, in the process becoming the first openly gay player in the NFL.

Despite an impressive showing during the pre-season with the Rams, he could not break through a stacked depth chart and was picked up off waivers by the Cowboys almost immediately.

By releasing Sam, the Cowboys made room for linebacker Troy Davis, a second-year player out of Central Florida.

Sam had always faced a stiff challenge in breaking into the Dallas roster, with their defense showing an unexpected improvement after an off-season that included the release of DeMarcus Ware and the loss of Sean Lee for the year after a torn ACL.
