Changes could be coming to NFL Combine tests

The NFL is considering changes to the tests and drills at the NFL Combine.

Common sense would be a factor in deciding which players do which drills, Matt Birk, the NFL's director of player development, said Friday at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.

"We run the 40-yard dash in Indianapolis. Why? The only reason anyone can ever give you is, that's how it's always been done," added Birk, a six-time Pro Bowl player who spent 15 seasons in the NFL.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said he anticipates bone length metrics as a potential addition to medical testing, according to ESPN.

"I think you'll gradually see position-specific change where it won't be just one whole new set of drills," Payton said. "It will gradually phase itself in as we know more and more what we're looking for for an offensive lineman, compared to a running back."
