Caps shut out Maple Leafs, Canucks pip Blues in shoot-out

Braden Holtby - Cropped

The Washington Capitals firmed for one of the Eastern Conference wildcard spots in the NHL, after a 4-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Caps (78 points) and the Boston Bruins (71) hold the wildcard spots in the East as it stands, with the former comfortably inside the post-season places after a shutout victory on Sunday.

League-leading scorer Alex Ovechkin struck the first two goals of the game to take his season tally to 41, four clear of next best Rick Nash of the New York Rangers.

Nicklas Backstrom assisted Ovechkin to the game's opening goal, the former being the season leader for assists with 47.

Ovechkin got an assist of his own as Washington went 3-0 up via the stick of Marcus Johansson, before Joel Ward's empty-netter.

Goaltender Braden Holtby earned the shutout for the Capitals, pulling off 32 saves.

The Vancouver Canucks survived coughing up a 5-2 lead, downing the St Louis Blues 6-5 after a shoot-out.

Leading by three goals with less than 12 minutes to play, the Canucks conceded thrice - with Blues trio Dmitrij Jaskin, Petteri Lindbohm and David Backes all scoring.

But Vancouver still got the two points, after each of Nick Bonino, Radim Vrbata and Chris Higgins were all on target in the shoot-out.

Evgeni Malkin scored two goals and assisted once in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 5-3 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Andrew Ladd struck twice as the Winnipeg Jets trounced the Los Angeles Kings 5-2, Jaromir Jagr had one goal and an assist in the Florida Panthers' 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Anaheim Ducks scored twice in the final period to down the Dallas Stars 3-1.
