The Washington Capitals moved to within three points of Pittsburgh in the NHL's Metropolitan Division on Wednesday after cruising past the Penguins 4-0.
Alex Ovechkin struck the opening two goals for Washington, while Eric Fehr and Mike Green got on the scoresheet in the third period, as the Capitals handed the Penguins their fifth loss in six matches.
Victory took the third-placed Capitals to 59 points, just three behind Pittsburgh, who sit second in the Eastern Conference's Metropolitan standings, with the New York Islanders on top with 65 points.
Ovechkin struck his 28th goal of the season late in the first period in Washington and added another less than three minutes into the middle period.
The Capitals finished the game having won 39 faceoffs to 24 and they completed their comprehensive triumph with two goals in the last 10 minutes from Fehr and Green.
In Los Angeles, the Kings struck twice in the third period to edge past the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3.
The Blackhawks led three times with LA's Jeff Carter dragging the Kings level the first two times, but, after Andrew Shaw made it 3-2 for Chicago, Tyler Toffoli and Jake Muzzin's late goals secured victory for the home side.
In the other match on Wednesday, Patrik Elias struck the winning goal in a shootout as the New Jersey Devils overcame the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1.
