The Buffalo Sabres finished January in the NHL without a victory, while the St Louis Blues extended their winning run to four games on Friday.

The Sabres suffered their 14th straight loss, going down 5-2 to the Vancouver Canucks.

Chris Higgins had a goal and an assist, while Nick Bonino also scored, for the winners.

Buffalo's last win came against the New York Islanders on December 26.

Kevin Shattenkirk scored the only goal in the shoot-out as the Blues edged the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2.

Ryan Reaves and David Backes struck in the opening four minutes to put the Blues in control at PNC Arena.

But goals from Justin Faulk and Ryan Murphy, the latter during a power-play, helped the Hurricanes back into the contest.

However, only Shattenkirk could net in the shoot-out as the Blues made it nine wins in their past 10 matches.

Patrick Sharp had four assists and Patrick Kane scored twice as the Chicago Blackhawks cruised past the Anaheim Ducks 4-1.

The Blackhawks were untroubled throughout, with Kane putting the result beyond doubt in the third period.

Simon Despres struck in overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a deserved 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 41 shots and looked set to help the Devils to an unlikely win.

But Chris Kunitz pulled the Penguins level late in the third period and Despres was the hero with an overtime wrist shot.

Semyon Varlamov stopped 23 shots to shut out the Nashville Predators and help his Colorado Avalanche to a 3-0 win.
