Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was a celebrity guest at a Charlotte nightclub party Saturday night that ended with gunfire.

The party was held at Label near downtown Charlotte and coincided with the CIAA basketball tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena. Label is two miles from the arena and the party was not sanctioned by the CIAA. CIAA officials stressed that the private party was in no way related to the Division II tournament.

Newton was on the stage with rapper Young Jeezy when shots rang out inside the club, according to Charlotte television station WSOC. Newton and other party guests ducked for cover. Two people were injured and the gunman has not been identified. Label later released a statement on the incident.

"Please be advised that an incident occurred (Saturday) evening at Label following an event," the statement read. "The exact circumstances concerning the incident have yet to be determined. Officials at Label are cooperating with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department concerning their investigation of this matter. Tonight's events at Label will take place as scheduled. It should be noted that there will continue to be very substantial security for all Label events during tournament weekend. And, Label remains fully committed to the safety and security of its patrons."
