The Bills are negotiating to sign free-agent quarterback Josh McCown, The Associated Press reported on Thursday.

According to the AP, a source disclosed that contract talks are taking place between the Bills and the 12-year veteran quarterback. McCown previously visited with the Bills last week.

The Bills and new head coach Rex Ryan are desperate for a reliable quarterback, as EJ Manuel lost his starting position after just four games last and his replacement, veteran Kyle Orton, announced his retirement following the season.

McCown was released by the Buccaneers on Feb. 11 with one year remaining on his two-year contract. He met with officials from the Bears and Jets at last week's NFL Combine but did not receive any offers. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he visited with the Browns but left without a deal.

McCown, 35, threw 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season. He started 11 games, including the last eight, and finished 1-10 for Tampa Bay, his sixth NFL team.
