Broncos defensive lineman Antonio Smith, the subject of an investigation into child abuse allegations, will sit out the team's voluntary organized team activities this week, the Denver Post reported.

A complaint was filed against Smith, 33, in November, triggering an investigation by the Fort Bend County (Texas) Sheriff's Office, which presented its findings to county district attorney John Healey Jr. in February.

No charges have been filed against Smith, but according to the Post, he and the Broncos mutually agreed that it would be "best for him to take the time to try to resolve the matter away from the Broncos' facility."

The Broncos, who signed Smith to a one-year, $2 million contract last month, not only have said they were unaware of the investigation at that point, but also that they became aware of the probe only last week.

Healey will decide whether there is enough evidence to convene a grand jury or dismiss the case.

Even if the case is dropped, Smith could face a suspension from the NFL under its personal conduct policy.
