Chicago defeated Toronto 4-0 in the NHL on Sunday to register their eighth win from 10 games this month, extending their lead at the top of the Western Conference's Central division to three points over the St Louis Blues.

Having lost 3-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets after a shoot-out on Saturday, the Blackhawks bounced back at home, scoring twice in both the first and third periods to continue the Maple Leafs' poor recent run.

The loss left Toronto in fourth in the East's Atlantic division with 41 points, two behind the third-placed Detroit Red Wings, who lost 2-1 to the Colorado Avalanche in a shootout.

Kane was involved in both of Chicago's first-period goals at the United Center, teeing up David Rundblad and Kris Versteeg to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead at the opening break.

The right wing extended the home side's advantage in the 10th minute of the third period thanks to Patrick Sharp, who finished the game with three assists, while captain Jonathan Toews completed the Blackhawks' victory two minutes later.

Goaltender Antti Raanta was the other hero for Chicago, notching 31 saves to earn a shutout, while Toronto coach Randy Carlyle has plenty of work to do after watching his team concede 15 goals in their past three games.

In Detroit, Nathan MacKinnon, Matt Duchene and Jarome Iginla all converted in the shoot-out for Colorado, who had to come from behind in the third period to force overtime.

Pavel Datsyuk had put the Red Wings in front in the fifth minute of the third period but the visiting Avalanche hit back with less than four minutes remaining through Erik Johnson.

After the first five shoot-out attempts hit the back of the net, Colorado goaltender Calvin Pickard saved six and saw one miss to ensure the Avalanche won their second straight game.

Cam Talbot made 18 saves as the New York Rangers notched their sixth consecutive victory, overcoming the Carolina Hurricanes 1-0, while the Dallas Stars fought back from three goals down to eventually triumph 6-5 over the Edmonton Oilers, following a shoot-out.

In other results, Loui Eriksson and Jakub Voracek scored in overtime as the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers triumphed in overtime, respectively prevailing 4-3 over the Buffalo Sabres and the Winnipeg Jets.
