Bears release Ray McDonald after latest domestic violence arrest

The Bears announced the release of defensive lineman Ray McDonald Monday afternoon after his domestic violence arrest earlier in the day.

His release comes just two months after the Bears signed the former 49ers defensive tackle. Monday's arrest was his third domestic violence-related charge in nine months. He was never charged by police or disciplined by the NFL for two incidents last year and had maintained his innocence. Despite those claims, the 49ers released the 30-year-old in December.

He arrived in Chicago saying he was looking forward to a second chance. It's unlikely he'll get that opportunity with an NFL team any time soon.

Monday's charges stem from an incident around 3:48 Monday morning in California, when McDonald allegedly physically assaulted a woman while she was holding a baby.

McDonald was arrested around 7 later in the morning at the home of former 49ers teammate Justin Smith. McDonald was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail, where he remained through Monday afternoon.

"I told him that my assessment was 'bad decision-making,' allowing himself to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or not withdrawing from a situation at the appropriate time,” Bears chairman George McCaskey said, via the Chicago Tribune, back when the team signed him. “And I told him, if he's to remain a Bear, that needs to improve. And he pledged to me that it would.”
