Benches clear in Astros-Yankees game

Tempers flared between the Astros and Yankees on Tuesday (US time) with a likely instigator at the center of it all.

Benches cleared in the top of the sixth inning after Houston outfielder Carlos Gomez flipped his bat in anger after flying out despite a 9-0 lead.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he told Gomez to "play the game the right way" and "show a little professionalism."

Gomez then began jawing with Girardi and the New York bench.

Gomez, as he has plenty in the past, insisted after the game he wasn't trying to show anyone up.

No punches were thrown during the incident, but it looked like Gomez had some words with Yankees catcher John Ryan Murphy before being held back by home plate umpire Eric Cooper.

Each bench was given a warning, but no players were thrown out of the game.

Was Brian McCann, who didn't get the start behind the plate, the one jawing at Gomez? The two do have a history together:

Gomez got the last laugh on the night, as he clobbered a three-run homer to put the Astros up 15-0. Houston won, 15-1.
