Orioles postpone second straight game amid violent protests

The Baltimore Orioles have postponed a second straight home game with the Chicago White Sox due following violent protests in the city.

Clashes between protesters and police just miles from the Orioles' Camden Yards home forced Monday's series opener with the White Sox to be called off roughly 40 minutes before the scheduled start time with about 1,000 fans inside the stadium.

Reports say nearly 2,000 members of the National Guard and police are present in the Camden Yards lots but, for fan safety, the team has elected to cancel Tuesday's scheduled encounter.

A date for the rearranged fixture yet to be confirmed.

An Orioles statement posted on Twitter read: "After consultation with MLB and state and local officials, tonight's game between the Orioles and the White Sox at Oriole Park has been postponed.

"An announcement regarding the make-up date will be made as soon as possible.

"Fans are encouraged to keep their tickets and parking passes until more information is made available."

The game, originally scheduled for 7.05pm (local time), was expected to either be postponed or moved to 4pm to accommodate the city-wide 10pm curfew mandated by Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

Out of respect for the curfew, the Baltimore Ravens have decided to cancel Thursday's NFL draft party at M and T Bank Stadium.

The protests follow the death of Freddie Gray, who passed away in hospital on April 19 due to spinal injuries a week after police took him into custody.
