Orioles crunch 18 runs to thrash Red Sox

Delmon Young - Cropped

The Baltimore Orioles' offense broke out on Sunday, crushing the Boston Red Sox 18-7 in MLB.

Five Delmon Young RBIs powered the Orioles to their highest run tally since April 2006, while Hanley Ramirez (two homers) impressed for the losers.

There were extra-innings wins for the Texas Rangers and the Minnesota Twins.

The Rangers edged the Los Angeles Angels 5-4, while the Twins downed the Seattle Mariners 4-2 - both matches lasting 11 innings.

Texas' win was one of four decided by a solitary run - the Philadelphia Phillies' 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, the Oakland Athletics' 7-6 loss to the Houston Astros and the Chicago White Sox's 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals the others.

The White Sox also downed the Royals 5-3, completing a double-header sweep.

An 8-0 shutout of the Arizona Diamondbacks marked the Pittsburgh Pirates' fifth straight victory, the New York Yankees downed the New York Mets 6-4, the San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1, and the Milwaukee Bucks outgunned the St Louis Cardinals 6-3.

The Miami Marlins have won five straight, courtesy of their 6-2 result over the Washington Nationals, the Tampa Bay Rays were too good for the Toronto Blue Jays, the Chicago Cubs won 5-2 at the Cincinnati Reds and the Detroit Tigers eclipsed the Cleveland Indians 8-6.

IMPACT PLAYERS
Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers: First baseman Cabrera is clicking on all cylinders right now. He went 3 for 4 with three runs, a home run and three RBIs in an 8-6 win over the Indians.

Jake Marisnick, Houston Astros: After nearly sitting out with leg tightness, outfielder Marisnick made the most out his decision to play. He went 2 for 4 with three runs, a home run, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Chris Archer, Tampa Bay Rays: Archer pitched a gem against the Blue Jays. He only gave up two hits on zero earned runs with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

KEY INJURIES
The Dodgers placed outfielder Yasiel Puig on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 25, with a left hamstring strain.

Cardinals outfielder Jason Heyward left Sunday's game against the Brewers with groin tightness. Heyward tweaked it while chasing after a ball in the right-field corner.

REACTIONS
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak gave the strongest inclination yet that pitcher Adam Wainwright (Achilles) was out for the season, when speaking on KMOX 1120 AM: "I would imagine that with this injury he will not pitch again this season, but we want to wait for the reports Monday."

FACT OF THE DAY
Rays pitcher Chris Archer has completed 26.2 innings of work without giving up an earned run.

SURPRISE PERFORMERS
Good: The Orioles' offense scorched Boston for 18 runs with seven different players recording two or more hits. Delmon Young led the way with three hits and five RBIs, and Chris Davis hit his third home run of the season.

Bad: The Dodgers, not because of anything they have or have not done on the field so far this season, but for their complete inability to identify talent. Alex Guerrero, 28, is batting .500 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in just 11 games, and most of those were just one-at-bat pinch hits.

LOOKING AHEAD
Corey Kluber will start for the Indians on Monday when they welcome the 12-6 Royals, the Cubs welcome the Pirates for a three-game series and the Astros are on the road at the Padres looking to build on their form, which has seen them win seven of their past eight.
