Braves' McKirahan suspended for 80 games

Braves left-hander Andrew McKirahan

The MLB has suspended Atlanta Braves reliever Andrew McKirahan for 80 games as a result of using performance-enhancing drugs.

McKirahan was sanctioned on Monday after he tested positive for ipamorelin - a growth hormone that is prohibited under the league's joint drug prevention and treatment program.

The 25-year-old left-hander is the fifth pitcher to be suspended by the MLB this season, following Ervin Santana (Minnesota Twins), Jenrry Mejia (New York Mets), David Rollins (Seattle Mariners) and McKirahan's team-mate Arodys Vizcaino (Atlanta Braves).

"I am extremely sorry for letting down the Atlanta Braves organization, my coaches, team-mates and the Braves fans," McKirahan said in a statement released by the MLB Players Association.

"I also sincerely apologize to my family, who has helped me reach this point in my career. This is in no way a reflection of my character or morals. I will work hard during my suspension and pray that everyone will find it in their hearts to forgive me.

"I hope to have the privilege and opportunity to return to the Atlanta Braves later this season, to earn back their trust and to do everything possible to contribute to the success of the organization."

McKirahan has appeared in three games this season, all in relief.

As a Rule 5 claim, McKirahan would have to been required to stay on the Braves' 25-man roster all season or be offered back to the Chicago Cubs.

"We are disappointed in the decision Andrew made," Braves president of baseball operations John Hart said.

"We are disappointed for him and for the ball-club. This was a guy who was beginning to pitch meaningful innings for us. The guys have been grinding. This was not good for the club."
